Online Safety: What’s Happening Online?

There are various forms of abuse and risk occurring in online communities, discussion groups and social gaming worlds. Thieves, spammers, scammers, marketers posing as users, griefers, bullies, sexual predators, and bots that automate antisocial behaviors are the dark underbelly of our democratized online society.

The antisocial actions of abusive members within a social environment cause widespread damage. They generate rapid frustration, then resentment in communities when they go unchecked, causing damage to a company’s reputation and business overall; and financial, emotional and, in some cases, physical harm to members. They are the poison that can infect a good community and cause it to dissolve.

Today’s controls for abusive behaviors are mostly “after the fact” discovery of specific incidences, with consequences that typically involve warnings and suspensions, with some reports to law enforcement agencies. What is missing from the control landscape are prevention capabilities that are not overly restrictive, alerting capabilities that are actionable, and consequences that transcend a single site.

Until now, the Internet has lacked a consistent cross-domain and cross-website user reputation service. This has made it difficult for businesses that enable social interaction to identify and acknowledge users who have the most positive social impact or to preempt undesirable or unacceptable behavior that negatively affects their users and hurts their business.
